A FEATURE FILM by baff akoto
Collateral Echoes is concerned with the disproportionate instances of Black and Immigrant Britons who have died at the hands of the police since records began in 1969. This documentary film moves beyond headlines and statistics, offering a deeply human exploration of mental health, racial disparities, the immigrant experience, and collective memory.
Filmed across Britain, and over multiple years, the families at the heart of the project, have entrusted Filmmaker Baff Akoto to create portraits of the people they have lost. Testimonies of love, joy and grief are retold to give memories life and return humanity back to those killed.
This non-linear cinematic experience emphasises the connectivity between memory and the present. Dance, music, and performance - including spoken prose from actor Paapa Essiedu and poetry by the late, great, Benjamin Zephaniah - interweave to bind the stories.
To date we are supported by justice NGO Inquest, the United Friends and Families Campaign (UFFC), BFI DOC Society, CPH: Lab, Ford Foundation and Sheffield DocFest.
